A new report on substantial progress in treating spinal injuries with embryonic stem cells, from UC Irvine. They managed to cause the cells to grow into new myelin sheaths for neurons.
(Side note, which the article doesn’t mention: This couldn’t have been done with adult stem cells; working on neurons more or less requires totipotent cells, and thus embryonic research. Let the politics begin…)

ok, this is a complete and total non-sequiter, but…
i saw your name when reading comments on ‘s journal, and my brain said “zunger…. you know that name”, and indeed spit out a connection mere seconds later.
i had dinner with you once, something like in July of (1999? 1998?). at the time, i was living in the los angeles area, and was visiting friends up in mountain view for the fourth of july. i was left on my own one evening, and pulled out my trusty palm pilot to see if there was anyone in the area who could amuse me. indeed, your name and phone number were in there, gotten from Jen Rader (?) in colorado, who was at the time going out with you (i only knew her through her roommate Jon Conway). at any rate, i recall giving my standard descriptor or “the short one with the long brown hair and the glasses”, and we (with one other person, a friend of yours) went out to dinner at some chineseish type place.
at least, i think it was you. how many Yony Zunger’s who live in mountain view and who go to stanford are there?
